About this Item

An early American edition. 8vo, publisher’s original dark blue cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and elaborately embossed in black and blind on the upper cover and spine. 267. A pretty binding with interior mellowing to the pages as typical, light aging to the cloth. This was Verne's first novel, and it met with tremendous success. Jules Verne was born in Nantes in 1828. In 1848, while studying in Paris, he co-wrote librettos for two operas and his verse comedy, Les Pailles rompues, was produced in 1850. Eventually, he began to follow the direction of his true talent: "thedelination, viz., of delightfuly extravagant voyages and adventures to which cleverly prepared scientific and geographical details lent an air of verisimilitude." Although some other authors had been similar to him, Verne had created his own literary genre of voyages imaginaires. Although Verne was pessimistic about the future of the novel, his "own novels, however, will certainly long continue to delight readers by reason of their sparkling style, their picturesque verve--apparently inherited directly from Dumas--their amusing and good-natured national caricatures, and the ingenuity with which the love element is either subordinated or completely excluded." [Ency Britt] Isaac Asimov stated in a later penned introduction that "Verne made a point of having his stories stick as closely as possible to known scientific facts, at times going to a lot of trouble to verify them. . . If science has advanced since Verne's time, the essence of science-fiction technique has not. . . Bookseller Inventory # 19684
