The file copy of this famous script, from the early master of the cartoon/animated genre, Tex Avery. 5 mimeographed pages (the complete film), this is copy #24, dated March 23, 1953 and stamped FILE COPY. MGM label to front cover stating "Cartoon Synopsis" and "#280" as well as being stamped "Complete." 8 1/2 x 11 sheets stapled into light green wrappers with the name of the producer and director on the front cover. The credited writer of the script is Heck Allen (story). Tex Avery was perhaps the greatest name in the history of animation. He perfected the art of gag cartoons and created beloved characters like Daffy Duck, Droopy, Screwy Squirrel and Chilly Willy. Avery is also credited with creating the personality of Bugs Bunny, and it was he who coined the phrase --What's up Doc? Starting at Walter Lantz Studios in 1929 as an animator, Avery next worked at Warner and directed some 60 titles in the Merrie Melodies and Looney Tunes series before moving to MGM in 1942 as their director of cartoons. The Flea Circus, a 7-minute short about a French flea circus, a clown flea, and a can-can flea, was typical Tex Avery - you start with a premise and turn it on its ear, firing sight gag after sight gag until the premise surrenders unconditionally. Here, the owner of a flea circus loses his livelihood when a dog comes backstage and the fleas have appropriate reactions to this fortuitous circumstance, "fleas run away from the circus to join a dog!" Animation scripts, especially one with this pedigree, rarely become available. Bookseller Inventory #
