Burkard showing a red plane sweeping over a Susquehanna River valley; shallow chipping and tears as well as strong creasing along rubbed panel and spine edges, closed tear near spine head, several spots of surface abrasion along joints and flap folds with slender vertical chip at center of front flap fold, top corner of front flap is price-clipped, some soiling to white rear panel; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Some foxing on edges; minimal browning to endpapers with past owner's signature in green ink on front pastedown; interior leaves are quite clean. B/w frontispiece photograph of plane plus two other b/w plates on unpaged leaves. Top corner of pages 169/170 is torn out but affects margin only with no loss of text. Summarized on the dust jacket: "Here is a modern adventure of mammoth proportions: - flood control and prevention by air! A moving, gripping story of man's struggle against this menace." Theiss was a popular writer of aviation stories for children and FLOOD MAPPERS ALOFT is among his least common titles. Although fictional, the story details the devastating Susquehanna River flood of St. Patrick's Day 1936 and efforts of aerial surveying by the New Deal program called the Civilian Conservation Corps (aka the CCC). A very good copy in a good dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory #
