Book Description Printed for Charles Harper, and John Amery., London, 1674. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 8vo (174 x 105mm). 653pp. in 8 parts ([16] (translatorís introduction and Machiavelliís prologue), 73pp.; [1], 94pp.; 76pp.; 70pp.; 82pp.; 76pp.; 74pp.; 81pp., [13] (catalogue of books printed for and sold by Joseph Marshall). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Machiavelli. Contemporary calf; (lightly soiled and browned at front and rear leaves; rubbed). Armorial bookplate of F.A. Harman Cates, F.S.A (of the Society of Antiquaries, London). First Edition of this English translation by Robert White of Machiavelliís Istorie fiorentine first published in 1532. Niccolò Machiavelli (1469Ė1527) is one of the most famous and controversial figures in the history of political thought and one of the iconic names of the Renaissance. In 1520, Pope Leo X commissioned Machiavelli to write a history of Florence. In 1525, Machiavelli presented Pope Clement VII the eight books of the Florentine Histories in manuscript which comprised of the origin of Florence up to 1492. It comes as little surprise that Machiavelli would stop at that date since the two popes largely wished to have a tracing of the de Medici family, of which they were both members. Machiavelli had very unsatisfactory resources in his research, and his work mostly represents a large accumulation of material, not necessarily factual, but more of a reaction to the dramatic changes that affected Florence and Italy in his lifetime. Machiavelliís Histories is largely a political history devoting essentially no space to any artistic or societal events. This commission marked an important part of his return to Florentine society. After being expelled for his alleged participation in a plot to overthrow the Medici, Machiavelli had continuously attempted to show his usefulness. Machiavelli was rewarded when the good graces of the pope fell upon him. He became a negotiator for the wool guild, as well as worked with the Franciscans and wrote for members of the Medici family. The Histories make up one of three of Machiavelliís most significant works of his lifetime, the other two, The Prince and The Discourses. The White translation of the Histories was the second work to appear in English, first being printed in a translation by Thomas Bedingfield in 1595. This translation was later reprinted in the eighteenth-century. In 1847, a new anonymous translation, entitled The History of Florence and of the Affairs of Italy, appeared. The Histories has had a long publication history, in part, perhaps, because the translator also provided other texts, including The Prince, but it has been superseded by two twentieth-century translations. Excellent and important Machiavellian translation of the History of Florence. It not only stands as a monumental literary work, but also as a vehicle that led to Machiavelliís reinstatement into Florentine society. Complete, and very rare as such, although found in several large North American institutions. Bookseller Inventory # D4694
