Four bound periodical volumes. 4to. 6.75 x 9 inches. All vols. [iv] + 308 pp. except Vol. III, [iv] + 303 pp. + [1] pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt. Extremities worn, some damage to spines and stains on boards. Light foxing but plates generally clean. Armorial bookplates of Robert Duncombe Shafto and his inscription at top of title. Illustrated by engraved titles and by 54 hand-coloured plates, some folding, and by engravings in text. Contents: Volume II, January to December, 1834; Volume III, January to December 1835; Volume IV, January to December 1836; Volume VI, January to December 1838. Joseph Harrison (c.1798-c.1860) was a horticulturist and writer from Sheffield, who issued the very successful Floricultural Cabinet from 1833, in addition to editing several other journals. Harrison had moved to Downham Market in Norfolk in 1837 (as reflected on the title page of Vol. VI) and after 1850 to Richmond, Surrey. The volumes were owned by Robert Duncombe Shafto (1796-1888) of Whitworth, Co. Durham and MP for North Durham, 1847-68. He was the grandson of the famous eighteenth century politician, Robert Shafto (1732-97), known as Bobby Shafto. A work renowned for the high quality of its colour plates.
