About this Item

Blue cloth with a vignette in black of a palm tree on the front cover and black letters on the spine. Born in San Diego in 1890, Alice Cooper Bailey, from the age of six weeks, lived in Hawaii until much later in her adult life. She was educated at Wellesley College, Oahu College, College of Hawaii (now Universityof Hawaii), and Boston Conservatory of Music. She was a member of numerous book-related organizations, including the National League of Pen Women (president of Honolulu branch, 1952-54). Bailey was also an expert on the life and work of Robert Louis Stevenson. Her fifth novel, FOOTPRINTS IN THE DUST, for which she won second prize, National League of American Pen Women, is a juvenile mystery set at an abandoned coffee plantation in Hawaii. (All of her young adult novels are set in the Hawaiian Islands.) In BOOKS, the literary critic J.W. Maury praised the "excellent character portrayal and a well developed plot, all in an exotic setting." [Literature Resource Center] Bailey wrote numerous books, including KATRINA AND JAN (1923), THE SKATING GANDER (1926), KIMO, THE WHISTLING BOY OFHAWAII (1927), SUN GOLD (1930), THE HAWAIIAN BOX MYSTERY (1960), and TO REMEMBER ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON (1966). Born in New York City, Margaret Ayer was an author and illustrator. She studied at the Museum School of Industrial Art (Philadelphia) and also in Paris and Rome. Her first job was illustrating a serial on China for ST. NICHOLAS. She illustrated well over a hundred books, including FOOTPRINTS IN THE DUST. Ayer was an active member of the Society of Illustrators, the Women's National Book Association, and the Artists Guild. [MORE JUNIOR AUTHORS].
