About this title

Describes how seasonal changes in a forest affect the plants and animals that live there

From School Library Journal:

Grade 3-5 This slim, well-designed volume introduces selected flora and fauna of the four seasons as found in a forest in the Eastern half of the United States. The section for each season is divided into mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, insects, and plant life, with a double-page spread for each group. The gracefully-written text discusses four or five examples of that group, giving details that relate to the particular season. An illustration on the facing page or across the bottom half of the pages shows a woodland scene that contains each creature or plant mentioned. The sparcity of labels in the pictures makes readers use content from the text to identify the creatures and plants, although the tiniest of them are enlarged and labeled in insets. While not as elegant as some of Lerner's earlier books such as Pitcher Plants (Morrow, 1983) in which an abundance of white space enhances the drawings, the attractive full-color paintings here do convey a different sense for each season, and the charming cover will draw in readers. Kathleen Odean, formerly at San Rafael Public Library, Calif.
