191pp. First edition. Original printed wraps, very clean, expertly rebacked. NEVINS I, 195: ‘An excellent early account of a tunnel escape from Libby.’ COULTER, TRAVELS IN THE CONFEDERATE STATES 262: ‘The chief significance of this paper-bound booklet lies in the escape journey of the author from Libby Prison to the Federal lines down the Peninsula towards Williamsburg. Captain Johnston was a resident of Henry County, Kentucky, at the outbreak of the war, joined the Sixth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry and was elected captain of Company H. After various battles in the western area, he was captured at Chickamauga in September 1863, and taken to Libby Prison in Richmond, going by way of Atlanta, Augusta, Columbia, Charlotte, Raleigh, Weldon, and Petersburg. Johnston was one of the prisoners who succeeded in escaping through the famous Rose tunnel. After entering the Federal lines, he went to Washington and to his home in Kentucky before rejoining the regiment, then a part of Sherman’s army. He participated in the campaign against Atlanta, but his three-year enlistment ended in August 1864.’ DORNBUSCH II, KY-342. Bookseller Inventory # 0019
