About this Item

94 PAGES. 2ND.EDITION. 5 3/4" X 9". ILLUSTRATED PRINTED SALMON COLORED PAPER WRAPPERS WITH AN ENGRAVED ILLUSTRATION OF THE "COOK COUNTY COURT HOUSE" IN CENTER CITY CHICAGO ON THE FRONT COVER AND THE TITLE PAGE BY CHILDS & CO., NOTED ENGRAVERS OF EARLY CHICAGO. MODERATE SOILING OF THE COVERS. SEWN ALONG THE BORDER EDGE. THE REAR COVER AND SEVERAL REAR PAGES ARE INTACT BUT DETACHED FROM THE SEWN PORTION OF THE BOOKLET. THE INTERIOR IS FINE WITHOUT FOXING OR DEFECTS. THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER ENGRAVINGS OF A PRINTING PRESS, A PIANO AND A BUSINESS BUILDING FOR G. M. SPEARS ALONG WITH THE 13 PAGES OF ADVERTISEMENTS. THE BOOKLET WAS PRINTED BY THE DEMOCRATIC PRESS STEAM PRINTING HOUSE, 45 CLARK STREET FROM SEVERAL ARTICLES PUBLISHED IN THE DAILY DEMOCRATIC PRESS NEWSPAPER. THE BOOKLET INCLUDES COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION ON THE PRODUCTION, TOTAL RECIEPTS AND SHIPMENTS OF MULTIPLE MANUFACTURERS IN CHICAGO AT THE TIME. AN UNBELIEVABLE COMPENDIUM OF THE CITY'S PRINCIPLE MANUFACTURER'S OUTPUT ONLY 18 YEARS AFTER ITS FOUNDING. THE TITLE ON THE COVER OF THE BOOKLET DIFFERS FROM THAT ON THE TITLE PAGE AND AS SUCH IS UNLISTED IN THE CHICAGO AMERICAN IMPRINTS INVENTORY (AII) OF 1938. IN ADDITION, THE INDEX OF THE AMERICAN IMPRINTS INVENTORY DOES NOT LIST AN N. P. IGLEHART AS THE PUBLISHER, YET THERE IS ALSO A SIMILAR SUCH BOOKLET PRINTED FOR N. P. IGLEHART IN 1854 (SEE AII # 84). IT SEEMS THAT THESE WERE BIBLIOGRAPHIC ERRORS IN INDEXING THE AII SURVEY. THERE IS NO MAP AS IS IMPLIED ON THIS COPY'S TITLE THAT IS PRINTED ON THE COVER. PERHAPS A MAP WAS REMOVED OR MAY HAVE BEEN PROVIDED SEPARATELY BY IGLEHART & CO. A REAL ESTATE AND FINANCIAL AGENT IN CHICAGO AT THE TIME. THE AMERICAN IMPRINTS INVENTORY LISTS A DIFFERENT VERSION (?) UNDER THE AUSPICES OF AN N. P. I (N) GLEHART & CO. REAL ESTATE AND FINANCIAL AGENTS IN 1856 , (AII # 178) AND NO MAP IS LISTED IN THAT DESCRIPTION. THERE ARE LOCATED ONLY FIVE COPIES OF THAT PUBLICATION IN THE 1938 AMERICAN IMPRINTS INVENTORY IN THE NO 4. CHECK LIST OF CHICAGO ANTE-FIRE IMPRINTS 1851-1871. IT SEEMS UNLIKELY THAT ALL OF THOSE VERSIONS LACKED THE MAP AS WELL. I SURMISE THAT THIS COPY COULD BE A VARIANT VERSION FROM THAT OF AII # 177 AND WAS PRINTED SEPARATELY AND ESPECIALLY FOR N. P. IGLEHART TO GIVE TO THEIR CUSTOMERS. THE BOOKLET IS PROTECTED IN A CUSTOM MADE CLAM SHELL GREEN CLOTH PROTECTIVE FOLDER INSERTED INTO A GREEN CLOTH LABELED SLIPCASE. A RARE CHICAGO PREFIRE ITEM. Size: 5 3/4" x 9". Bookseller Inventory # 001842
