About this Item

large 12mo. quarter cloth with paper-covered boards and spine label. (iv), 20 pages. Printed for Glen Dawson in an edition of 149 copies by Roger Levenson at his Tamalpais Press, Berkeley. This is one of 100 copies that don't include a leaf from the 1575 edition of Fray Maturino Gilberti's Thesoro spiritual de pobres en lengua de Michuacan. (Leaf Book - Chalmers 129). Padre Gilberti (1498-1585) was a Franciscan friar sent to the Mexican province of Michoacan about 1542. He became fluent in the language of the Tarascan Indians, and was known as "the Cicero of the Michoacan language." Several of his manuscripts were printed by Juan Pablos, starting in 1558, on the first press set up in Mexico City. The Spiritual Treasury of the Poorwith a leaf included in this volume as a frontispiece, was published in Tarascan by Antonio Espinosa, with additional prayers in Latin and Spanish. At the end was Espinosa's printer's mark with its anchor and bull's skull, the first to be used in the Western Hemisphere. Inscribed on the front pastedown "A Printer's Copy for James LaMar Weygand, R.L." quarter cloth with paper-covered boards and spine label. Bookseller Inventory # 99463
