About this Item

hardcover, 5¾" x 9", with dust jacket Three maps, 20 b&w photographs, four family trees (Buxton, Gurney, Barclay, and Hoare families), appendices, and index. Verily Anderson has unearthed a dynasty of several generations filled with nonconformist industrialists, philanthropists and orators - a much inter-married family tree. They started in the seventeenth century in the newly-founded Quaker movement and spread into weaving, brewing, and banking. Fascinating reading. Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, and barcode. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD price-clipped dust jacket 320 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 36918

About this title

Synopsis:

The seventeenth-century Gurneys, Barclays, Hanbury and Hoares were part of the Quaker movement. Their integrity gained respect and attracted investors to the banking, weaving and brewing industries they started. Later Buxton led the anti-slavery campaigns and Elizabeth Fry set about reforming prisons. A remarkable international family well researched by Verily Anderson, who still lives at Northrepps, the Gurney family home in Norfolk. This reprinted version of her 1980 classic, originally published by Hodder & Stoughton, will meet the demand for knowledge of this family, and is a good companion to her 'Northrepps Grandchildren' already republished.
