About the Author:

Janet Hartin has had a love for plants and nature as far back as she can remember. Her early enthusiasm was spawned by family vacations to nearly every national park in the United States by the time she was 16. Her first paid horticulture job was selling nursery and bedding plants at a Midwest retail nursery, followed by a move to Hilo, Hawaii where she worked in the anthurium industry. After a year in paradise she moved to Minnesota where she obtained B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Minnesota. During college, Janet worked in the horticulture industry in both the public and private landscape sectors. Keeping in tough with real-world problems, opportunities and advancements in the world of horticulture, coupled with her education, helped land Janet her dream job in 1984 as a horticulturist with the University of CaliforniaCooperative Extension, a position she still holds. Her position allows her to work directly with the landscape industry, keeping people at all stages of their careers abreast of the latest research-based information on plant varieties, irrigation and pest management techniques, and tree, shrub, and turf care. Shw has published more than 100 articles, fact sheets, technical publications and books on hortifulture topics, and presented hundreds of talks to industry and professional societal groups, both nationally and internationally.
