About this Item

Blue cloth with gilt lettering. Hint of edgewear. Tips of corners bumped. Text is clean and white, no marks. Unclipped DJ with 25s price shows rubbing and chips head and heel of spine, minor edgewear and light general scuffing and soil. "A ballad is a song that comments on life by telling a story in a familiar style. A broad definition, no doubt, but the narrowest that will cover all the verse in this selection. Mr. Hodgart includes not only what might be called "Country" ballads- of which the most famous are the tradtional Anglo-Scottish songs assembled by F.J. Child- but also the "Town" ballads represented by "broadsides". Thus there are sections containing Border and tradtional ballads, with one on the broadsides themselves, and others devoted to the Irish, Australian and American ballads which are within the broadside tradition."
