About this Item

First Printing (so stated). 8vo: [8],437,[1]pp. Publisher's maroon cloth, upper cover stamped in blind and black with cross motif, spine lettered in tan and silver, top edge stained blue-grey with matching blue-grey end papers, illustrated title page; price-clipped first issue dust-jacket with publisher's code 8/54 to front flap. Very Fine (virtually pristine), in about Fine jacket (spine panel lettering slightly toned, very brief edge wear). Petersen A37.2b. After winning the Nobel prize for literature in 1950, Faulkner seemed to feel constrained to write didactic, moral fiction, and he struggled for years on this ambitious work (one critic has judged it his final great novel). By juxtaposing elements of the Passion of Christ against a story of trench mutiny in World War I France, Faulkner attempts to combine two very different types of narrative: an allegorical fable and a realistic tale of war, politics, and personal relationships. Although the book won both the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize (the first book to ever accomplish this feat), "this overwritten, sometimes pompous allegory only occasionally flowers into eloquence. Faulkner does, however, provide a delightful fable about a racehorse."
