About this Item

4to. Original printed boards. Lacks jacket, boards rubbed and with some wear at extremities. FIRST EDITION, AN ILLUSTRATED PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED in the year of publication by Thurber with a drawing of a rabbit, three dogs, a woman, and a flower and butterfly: "For Margaret Thurlow / Who helps me to get people told. With all best wishes. James Thurber. September 14, 1940." Margaret Thurlow Todd worked for ten years as a secretary and copy editor at the New Yorker. One of her responsibilities was to assist the office manager in handling Thurber's correspondence from readers and regarding reprint requests. Thurber wrote to E.B. White: "I have a swell idea for a play which I want to get at. I need someone to help me on it, though. I may get a girl in to dictate to, and wish I had Margaret Thurlow. She was up here for a day or two." (The Thurber Letters, ed. Harrison Kinney and Rosemary A. Thurber, p. 340). Bookseller Inventory # 60632
