"A New Edition, Corrected. In three volumes." Small 8vo: [4],xli,[3],223,[1]; [4],272; [2],304pp, with 52 superb wood cuts by John and Thomas Bewick. Beautifully bound by Orrock & son in half-burgundy morocco, marbled sides and end papers, top edges gilt, others untrimmed, title-page vignettes. Fine copies, with occasional spotting to preliminaries, pages otherwise fresh and bright with deep, rich impressions of the cuts. Signature opposite title page of each volume of Robert Pitcairn (1793-1855), dated Dec. 1823. Pitcairn was a Scottish antiquary and author of Criminal trials and other Proceedings before the High Court of the Judiciary in Scotland (1829-1833). Nineteenth century armorial book plates of Walter King (a lion sejant erect ppr., holding between its paws an escallop arg.) and a second (possibly Pitcairn's) with motto 'Deo et regi.' Hugo 4279. Tattersfield TB2.167. Reprint of the first edition of 1796-1800 (Hugo 95). Legrand was curator of manuscripts at the French National Library for five years until his death, in 1800.
