Lescroart; Introduction. 165pp. ***The history of San Francisco's venerable Italian landmark restaurant, long a mainstay and highpoint of the city's North Beach neighborhood. Begun in 1886 by Angelo Del Monte when he took over a Mexican restaurant in S.F.'s Barbary Coast, this book tells 'a lively tale of cookery and passion, centered around the immigrants who established Fior d'Italia. The book chronicles the shenanigans of Prohibition clientele and the requirements of pleasing VIPs such as Enrico Caruso, Richard M. Nixon and Luciano Pavarotti. it is also replete with photographs spanning decades and traditional Italian recipes'(from DJ flap.)
