In the Latin American Travel Series. The book was first published in 1887 based on the experiences of the author who travelled in Mexico between 1880 and 1887. The author's aim was to promote understanding between the United States and Mexico. She had studied Spanish and worked hard to learn the idiomatic Spanish of the people who she visited which enlarged her understanding of various Mexican elements. All classes of people were visited and an attempt to comprehend the poor, Indians and lower middle classes was provided by her immersion in provincial life as well as that of the large cities.
