About this Item

Illustrated with Several historiated woodcut initials and woodcut printer’s device. Small 8vo. Bound in full modern brown pigskin blindstamped in Renaissance style (with old endpapers), with a vellum lettering piece from the original binding affixed to front cover; spine with raised bands over binding cords. Printed by Ulrich Morhard, Tübingen 1542. First Tübingen edition; second or third complete edition. Text in Latin (with occasional words and passages in German). Dedicatory epistle from the first edition (dated May 1506) on leaf A2r,v. Rare early edition of Bebel’s celebrated collection of jokes and anecdotes (first printed in 1508), here complete in all its three “books.” (The third book first appeared in 1512.) To which is added a selection from the joke-book by the 15th-century Italian humanist Poggio Bracciolini (compiled in 1451 and first printed ca.1470). Both collections were extremely popular, and both contain many stories which are bawdy or even obscene, and many are sharply anticlerical. Also included is the satirical Prognostica by Tübingen humanist Jakob Henrichmann (from which Rabelais freely adapted his Pantagrueline Prognostications), as well as Bebel’s Latin translation of the popular German folksong Ich stund an einem Morgen. Bebel’s Facetiae are “most crucial in the printed history of erotic jokes and humor.” (G. Legman, Rationale of the Dirty Joke, pg.24). In his preface to the 1512 edition of the Facetiae, Bebel tells the reader that although his stories are considered by some to be “too lascivious and dirty,” actually he had heard them all told by “serious men at banquets,” often in the presence of ladies (apud matronas). Bebel’s Facetiae has a lot in common with the earlier collection by Bracciolini. Both authors were well-known Humanists attempting to put into Latin earthy anecdotes originally told in Italian or German. The genre of facetiae, a Latin collection of jokes, often quite irreverent and racy, was a quintessential Renaissance phenomenon, “an expression of delight in life, of intellectual and erotic freedom, and of pleasure in the skill and subtlety of literary creation.” (Bruno Boesch (ed.), German Literature: A Critical Survey, pg.112.) Outer margin of title repaired without loss; outer margin cropped close to marginal notes. One leaf with a small hole in outer margin affecting two letters only; closed marginal tear to the final leaf (no loss); some dampstaining and discoloration. Early manuscript possession note (crossed out) to title page; some early underlinings and marginal pointing hands; one joke crossed through by a single line in ink; o/w generally clean with text readable throughout. Scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 6133
