About this title

Synopsis:

On September 1996 the exhibition of the An-sky collection opened in the Russian Museum of Ethnography in St Petersburg. It was the end of a successful tour that had started in the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam in 1992, of a collection that had acquired almost legendary status. In the intervening years the show had visited Cologne, Frankfurt, Jerusalem, New York and St Petersburg, Florida. That tour was the first joint project of our two institutions. And it was not long after the opening of the An-sky exhibition in Amsterdam that preparations began for a second joint project: an exhibition of part of the Sephardi collection of the Russian Museum of Ethnography, a collection featuring objects from Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Crimea, Facing West. Oriental Jews of Central Asia and the Caucasus highlights a little-known Jewish world, whose origins stretch far back, perhaps more than two millennia. A Jewish world in which Persia formed the central focus. A Jewish world in which far-reaching integration into the surrounding society did not lead to assimilation. And a Jewish world that only began to adapt to the traditions of European Jewry after corning into contact with Sephardi Jews in the eighteenth century. The Jewish world of the Orient, in whose synagogues the direction of Jerusalem is indicated by the Ark at the western wall. After a first exploratory investigation of the collection it was decided to set the Crimean objects aside for a separate project. This catalogue therefore focuses on work on objects from Central Asia and the Caucasus and represents the first publication of descriptions and research articles. In Russia, the project was coordinated by our friend and highly professional colleague Dr Ludmila Uritskaya, chief curator. In addition to contributions from the highly proficient and expert curators of the Russian Museum of Ethnography Dr Vladimir Dmitriev.
