Written by prominent nineteenth century engraver, Thomas Woolnoth, who was known for his portraits of theatre-people, as well as for being the official engraver to Queen Victoria. Woolnoth explores the different techniques used to create a twenty-five different expressions or emotions, including pride, envy, spite and satire, among many others, with an illustration to accompany each description. Illustrated with twenty-five plates and a frontispiece. Collated, complete. With the bookplate of Horatio Noble Pym, a well-known book collector and solicitor from the nineteenth century. Bound in half calf with marbled paper-covered boards.Externally, very smart, with light bumping to the extremities and a little rubbing to joints and extremities. Bookplate to the front paste down.
