In 1966, fourteen year old Nicole Murdoch disappears during a December nor'easter. The next day, searchers spot one of her cross-country ski poles way out on the thin ice of Lake Wonalancet. They presume she became disoriented during the blizzard and broke through the ice and drowned. Scuba divers are unable to find her body. The search will not be resumed until ice-out next spring. Nicole's older sister Natalie finds suicidal writings in Nicole's dresser - drawings of gravestones with Nicole's name on them and 19th century-like inscriptions. Consequently, the Murdoch family hires local psychotherapist Jason Matthews to do a psychological post-mortem. Did Nicole intentionally take her life? If so, why? Matthews records his findings in his journal. His inquiries lead to surprising discoveries and an unexpected resolution. So Fade the Lovely is the relevant seven month portion of this journal. Nicole's disappearance affects the small town of Dicey's Mill in many ways. The frozen surface of Lake Wonalancet has always been the hub of winter life. But now people are hesitant to venture out on the lake. Having fun might desecrate Nicole's memory. There is also the risk of coming upon her corpse unexpectedly, her frozen face beneath the ice making direct eye contact with one's own. Matthews' journal describes how townsfolk eventually...
