About this title

This was the first detailed history of the development and world-wide use of the Fairlie locomotive from its inception in 1865 to the construction of the final class in 1911. The book examines the experimental period (1865-1870) when ten locomotives were built and the subsequent era when eight British, three Continental and two railroad companies all built the engine. The book examines the construction and performance of the Fairlies and also the single boiler American Mason-Fairlies (1871-1914) and the double-boiler Pechot-Bourdons (1888-1921).
