About this Item

Octavo. No pagination. Illustrated by Frank Ver Beck. A rich fantasy of an educated Englishman in India who takes possession of an elephant named Ulysses to train. Initially, it takes about a year but he teaches him the alphabet and the basics of recognizing the meaning of words and reads a novel but is distressed to find it is not true. The owner then explains various literary forms and Ulysses who by now is able to inquire about the application of Schopenhauer's Four-fold Root of Sufficient Reason (which Ulysses had learned from reading essays by Frederick Harrison). While the owner was gone away to inspect a coffee plantation, his cockney assistant was told to supply Ulysses with books [Here there is a marvelous plate of the man bringing a wheelbarrow to him full of books] Upon the owner's return he found not only had all the books had been read but Ulysses now inquired as to their implications with references to Compte and Hegel. As the story continues the owner becomes subservient and the vast learning drives Ulysses to dominate with irrational behavior. A fine bright copy bound in 1/4 green cloth over pictorial paper covered boards accented in dark green and gilt, spine lettering gilt, decorative endpapers in a near fine pictorial dust jacket lettered and decorated in green and red, very light chipping to spine ends. Very nice. Bookseller Inventory # 016544
