About this Item

As published in four consecutive issues of The Filson Club History Quarterly, January, April, July, and October, 1971, each in original printed wraps, light general wear, edges sunned. The author, 1811 - 1875, would go on to renown as an author, scientist, and naturalist, mostly in the state of Wisconsin. Specific to his work during the present time period, while he and others worked on the Shippingsport Canal, he would publish, in 1828, apparently at the age of 17, Notice Of The Louisville And Shippingsport Canal And Of The Geology Of The Vicinity, in the American Journal Of Science And Art. It was also Lapham who drafted virtually all the plans for the Canal despite his young age. From the present introduction, "From 1826 until his departure in 1830, Lapham made valuable scientific and cultural observations in the Falls area, and this information he recorded in journals which are fully edited here for the first time."
