About this Item

In the second half of 19th century on at many as one quarter of all sailing ships the master's family joined him at sea. The well-rounded influence of a family on board extended throughout the ship and eased the brutality that often haunted the men before the mast. Whaling voyages often lasted as long as four years. The first record of a family on a whaling voyage were the Russels who shipped out of Nantucket in 1823. Shadow where price sticker was on ft cover at top corner. Bookseller Inventory # 048801
