Synopsis: Describes the life of Dorothy, who lives in a small village on the north coast of Jamaica.
From School Library Journal:
ea. vol: rev. ed. 31p. maps. photogs. (Families the World Over Series). CIP. Lerner. Aug. 1985. PLB $8.95. Grade 2-4 The texts of these revised editions of Village in Nigeria (1984) and Jamaican Village (1982, both A & C Black) are centered around the daily activities of a family in these countries. Numerous color photographs show that these two families' life styles are much different from life in most of America: the lack of indoor plumbing in Jamaica and the lack of water in Nigeria, for instance. However, both families are well-to-do. The children in both books plan to go to college. The Jamaican family has its own farm; their kitchen is equipped with a blender and an electric mixer. Political turmoil is ignored. People in the photographs appear well-fed and happy. The authors do provide information about social life and custom. The photographs help to visualize the lives of these two families, but some of the pictures are lacking in clarity. Each book contains three maps: national (depicting railroads, major roads and topography), regional and global. Basic facts sections are included at the end of the texts, listing the capital, official language, form of money, area and population. A drawing of each country's flag is also included. Attractive, and some of the information is useful, but children will come away from these books believing that this is the way of life in these countries. Tom S. Hurlburt, Anoka County Library, Blaine, Minn.
