About this title

Synopsis:

-- Focuses on popular subjects that are bound to capture the reader's imagination -- Provides a window into American culture -- Encourages moral reasoning and fundamental thinking Fascinating case studies of some of the biggest crimes.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 8 Up-Beginning with the O. J. Simpson trial, Marzilli examines Americans' absorption with crime by touching on six separate activities, incidents, and/or trials: Sacco and Vanzetti, Leopold and Loeb, the gangsters of the 1920s, an escape from Alcatraz, Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, and the Watergate burglary and Nixon's resignation. Each crime is described and its impact on society is examined within the context of the period. The black-and-white photographs, including one of a false head fashioned by an Alcatraz inmate, add interest. There is some use of primary-source documents. A two-page bibliography is included, but there are no source notes for quotations. The chronology lists additional crimes committed during the 20th century and may serve as a jumping-off point for more research or reading.
