About this title

Synopsis:

Explains nine easily repeatable scientific experiments that illustrate basic principles of machines, water, motion, light, air, electricity, sound, radioactivity, and bacteriology

From School Library Journal:

Grade 4-7 Filson introduces some great scientists through a conversational, "you-are-there" approach followed by experiments for readers to perform. Famous Experiments . . . can be read for interest or for information, and will surely give young readers a better understanding of the scientific method and a motivation for reading about science or scientists. The subjects include the building of the pyramids, Archimedes and water displacement, Galileo and gravity, Newton and light refraction, von Guericke and air pressure, Faraday and continuous electrical current, the Doppler effect, and Fleming and penicillin. No experiment accompanies the sketch of Marie Curie. Unfortunately, there is no mention of the need for adult supervision in an experiment on air pressure calling for directing steam from boiling water into a glass bottle. The black-and-white illustrations do elucidate the text. Andrea Antico, Aurora Hills Middle School Library, Colo.
