Copy 277 of 1025, this handsome folio contains => 70 illustrations very nicely reproduced using collotype plates, together forming a dizzying panoply of artists, media, and periods: Callot, D?rer, Goya, Goltzius, Meryon, Zorn, Turner, Blake, Cranach, Lucas van Leyden, Daumier, Holbein, and Whistler, inter alios; lithographs, wood engravings, etchings, mezzotints, aquatints, stipple engravings, and woodcuts. The plates are introduced and interleaved by text describing them, with one large antique-style historiated red initial in the introduction. Folio (39.5 cm, 15.6"). xx, [140] pp. 70 plates. Quarter white cloth over green cloth boards, single gilt fillet along spine, with gilt stamp of a putti ensconced in ribbons and foliage on upper cover; gilt title to spine, top edge gilt and fore-edge deckled. Front hinge cracked, held by cloth, and glue remnants on front pastedown; priced accordingly. Text clean, a pleasant volume of classic sort. Bookseller Inventory #
