About this title

Clay Bishop is in his 70s in 1927 when he returns to the now-abandoned family farm where he grew up in Hawkins County, TN. While standing in the family cemetery on the highest hill overlooking the farm, he begins to recall the years of his life, starting with the day he considers his life to have actually begun--standing barefoot along a muddy road outside Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia with his older brother Jimmy, as they watched General Robert E. Lee ride past them immediately after his surrender to Ulysses S. Grant, ending the Civil War. Following a brief return home to the farm, the two brothers set out to find their own lives, and fortunes. They begin in St. Augustine, FL, but after realizing that there must be more to find, they move on, looking for direction in both their lives.
