About this Item

NY, 1936, 1st, Scribner's. Cloth, 7¼x9¾, 78p, DW, ($2.00), chipped. Eight color pls and endpapers by Grant Wood. A summer spent on the grandparents farm. Guy Davenport reminds us that Wood belonged to a period of American art when satire was a norm; the age of Sinclair Lewis, H.L. Mencken, and James Thurber. It was a searchingly psychological satire, gentle by today’s standards, civilized and yet keenly observant, and perfectly suited to these farm stories. Not ex-library, no internal marks, tight and clean. Bookseller Inventory # 46168
