Synopsis: Farmer Mack's attempts to measure his wonderfully fat pig create chaos on his farm.
From School Library Journal:
Kindergarten-Grade 3 While Farmer Mack Measures His Pig is meant to be a "madcap" romp of a story about two braggart farmers trying to establish whose pig is porkier, the loosely connected series of events keeps it from being any fun. Johnston begins well enough, but her story loses momentum about halfway through. It becomes forced and disjointed from this point on, and the pig measuring idea loses focus; there are moments in which it is difficult to remember what the current action has to do with the original point of the story. Lloyd's pigs are expressively and humorously drawn, but her illustrations of the farmers are stiff, clumsy, and somewhat grotesque. Farmer Mack lacks sparkle and cohesion and fails to generate much interest or enthusiasm. Laura Bacher, St. Catherine's School, Richmond, Va.
