Description:

The 19th century is regarded as the century of the clipper, those magnificent vessels which plied the trade routes of the world, and which bore witness to the fine flowering of the design and ship building art, married to the ability of the sailors to wring the utmost from the wind and water. In this substantial book the author carefully presents the factors which influenced the design of these vessels. The book is stoutly bound in brown cloth with gilt lettering on the spine and gilt decoration on the front cover and comprises 314 pages including index. It is generously illustrated throughout with photographs, maps and plans, some of which are folding or tipped-on and in colour. The bottom corner of the front board is a little bumped and the bottom edge of the pages towards the front of the book is a little dust marked, while the top edge of the pages is very lightly foxed. There is also a tiny nick in the cloth on the bottom, inner edge of the back board where it adjoins the endpaper. Otherwise the binding is clean and bright - and the book is free of inscriptions and the text is clear. The non price-clipped dustwrapper is a little edge worn, particularly at the top of the spine; there is a little creasing at the top of the back panel. Otherwise the wrapper is fully intact, clean and bright - in very good condition for its age. Standard postage applies for UK customers, but extra postage will be needed for overseas customers. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Nautical Publishing 1973 1st., 1973. 314pp. Profusely illustrated. 29x22. A superb copy, almost like New; Mint in Near-Mint d/j, . The 19th century is popularly regarded as the century of the clippers, the magnificent fast sailing vessels which bore witness to the flowering of ship design and building married to the ability of sailors to wring the utmost from wind and water. There were, however, other types of vessel whose trade and economic viability depended on speed, The fruit schooners, packet ships and small opium-runners are only some, and they play just as important a part in the story of the development of the fast sailing ship. Profusely illustrated with photographs, plans, & drawings, this book is now recognised as the definitive work on the subject. Bookseller Inventory # 7308
