About this title

Fat Boy, Little Man reveals the story of growing up, discovering one’s cultural identity, and facing death as seen through the lens of a Chinese-American youth. In this touching memoir, high school student Wayland Fong documents pivotal moments in his adolescence through a deeply personal narrative told through a series of journal entries written during his junior and senior years of high school. From the bustling streets of Beijing to the quiet suburb of Palo Alto, Fong narrates stories of his father escaping from Vietnam and living in refugee camps at the age of eleven, his mother forced into peasant labor during the Cultural Revolution, and his own experience losing his two grandfathers and the hardships he faced growing up with a chronic disease. Lyrical, inquisitive, and honest, Fong takes us on a thought-provoking journey as he gains exposure to the world and himself in the process.
