About this title

Synopsis:

These poems were inspired by my daughters. From the moment they entered our lives they created and took space in our hearts that we did not know existed. As I watched them looking, listening, observing, chattering, playing, experimenting, laughing, crying I knew they were always learning... and growing. I was surprised, however, at how much I learnt, and continue to learn, from them. In turn I discovered that my sense of self was diminished: whatever I knew, I realized, I knew less than I thought I knew. Turning to them I saw natural, acquisitive, explosive, uninhibited, intuitive, learners. Whereas I learnt slowly, incrementally. Yet, surprisingly, they would turn to me for answers. I felt they knew, and could know, more than I did. Who taught? Who learnt?

These poems reflect discovery of their growth and self-discovery. They come to me as images, words, phrases, scenes: welling up and tumbling out onto whatever scraps of paper I have handy wherever I happen to be. Sometimes I write them while I am witnessing them. Oftentimes I write them while traveling, thinking of them. On planes, trains, in restaurants, during meetings, sleeping at night.

While these poems are highly personal they carry, I believe, universal themes that all parents, Fathers and Mothers, and even grand-parents will readily relate to. There is joy in them and longing as well the sadness of passing times and hints of times to come. The passages of parenting cannot be easily transmitted to non-parents, but, I hope, these poems transmit some of the feelings of joy, love, and hope of being a parent.
