About this Item

First Impression of the singer, songwriter, poet, novelist's first book. 8vo: 223,[1]pp. Publisher's forest-green cloth, spine stamped in silver gilt, illustrated dust jacket (price-clipped), printed in pink and black. Fine unread copy, about Fine jacket, lightly toned to the perimeter, with trivial closed tear to bottom of back panel. A very collectible example. In 1959, Leonard Cohen traveled to London on a Canada Council grant. On the day he arrived, he "purchased a typewriter (a green Olivetti 22 that lasted for decades) and his 'famous blue raincoat', a Burberry. His principal activity in London was writing his first published novel, The Favourite Game. . . . it is Cohen's most autobiographical work and includes a number of allusions to James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. While the links to Joyce and others have been commented on by numerous critics, the novel is original in form and content. Admired for its sparse poetic qualities, the book marks Cohen's initial attempt to interject cinematic imagery into the form of the novel . . ." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B.
