Synopsis: In Feast and Famine of a Culinary Vagabond, Wolfgang Lord Erbe cooks up an engaging memoir of tragedy, triumph, and the delectable life of a chef and restaurant owner. As a child, he escapes the horrors of the Russian Army during World War II, and at sixteen, he learns the culinary profession as a way to survive and avoid starvation. Trained as a European chef, as well as in restaurant service, hotel management and catering, he begins to think a better life is possible. It is only when he immigrates to the United States that his career begins to take off. A hotelman and chef-restaurateur, he meets and serves such luminaries as the Rockefellers, the Rothchilds, Pope Paul, and Henry Luce. Invited to the White House by the president?s personal chef, he seems to be at the top of his game. But Erbe writes movingly of how haunted he is by his past, and when he starts to become lost in memories of personal tragedies, his life begins to split at the seams. Preoccupied by his unfilled dreams, he begins to self-destruct until an unexpected turn in his life helps him to regain his footing. As Erbe pulls himself up, he begins to travel internationally as a chef, visiting Russia and working in Siberia for Alaskan Airlines. But his future holds keys to his past, and Erbe visits the POW camp where his father suffered, and the city of Moscow where his grandparents lived until they fled the Russian Revolution. In confronting his past, he comes to understand it?and himself. This is a stunning story of perseverance and courage in the face of almost overwhelming odds. Beautifully written and warmly told, Feast and Famine of a Culinary Vagabond offers both epic adventure and an insider?s look into the life of a chef.
