About this title

Synopsis:

Traces the history of the development of U.S. policy concerning American Indians.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 5-9-- A history of North American Indian--U. S. relations from 1492 to the present. The text is well illustrated with many black-and-white photographs and maps, as well as a section of color plates of Indian drawings depicting their relations with white men. Because the book is written from a strictly chronological approach, it is easier to understand than Frank Porter's more detailed The Bureau of Indian Affairs (Chelsea House, 1988). Kelly's book concentrates less on the B. I. A. than this earlier book, and is a more restrained treatment of the plight of the Indian, leaving out many shocking and sensational examples of mistreatment and deception found in other volumes of this series. For a short, clear overview of the seesawing policy of the U. S. government toward the American Indian, this is a good choice. --Yvonne Frey, Illinois Central College, East Peoria
