About this Item

Book. 8vo - over 7¾. 160 pp. With over 50 illustrations in color by C. Köystrand, C. Krejeif, G. Roland and others. 8½x5½, bound between two wooden pieces of a cigar box (or imitating such) with "Feine Havannas/Flor Fina" emblem stamped on front cover, cloth spine. Illustrations of ladies, many in their undergarments, are appropriate to this collection of slightly salacious jokes and tales, all calculated to amuse the smoking man, hence the binding. Has two chromolithograph cigar labels on spine and cover, and two larger cigar labels making up the front endpapers, as well as a chromolithograph ribbon seal that is now broken (piece broken off remains), but largely intact and laid in. The author, Max Kempner-Hochstadt, was known in his day mostly as a playwright of light fare, and some of his stage comedies became the basis for operettas by the likes of Eduard Kunneke. Of Jewish extraction, his work was boycotted by the Nazis after their rise to power and Kempner-Hochstadt fled to Paris where he died, age 70, penniless. Very rare book, with only other copy located currently in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek. Cigar label on spine with wear, light shelf wear, ribbon seal is chipped and torn with some tape repair. Slight bowing to the boards. Book itself is very tight, and pages are immaculate, with light age toning. Near fine. Bookseller Inventory # 000842

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
