About this title

Synopsis:

Much of the world regards him as the most gifted musical genius of all time, but few people know Felix Medelssohn the son, brother, husband, father, adversary, critic, and friend. In Felix Mendelssohn: Out of the Depths of His Heart, scholar Helen Martens casts light on these aspects of a life that encompassed the greatest joys and deepest disappointments. Through thousands of solidly researched autograph letters, archival materials, and articles from nineteenth-century journals and newspapers of Mendelssohn's musical life and his remarkable family, readers will discover:-What motivated him in his personal life and in his art-Where he found fulfillment and what sustained him in difficult times-What God and the Bible meant to him-What he thought of the process of composing, and which of his compositions satisfied him most and least-Why he completed no opera after the age of eighteen-How he met the beautiful, aristocratic pianist who moved in and out of his life. Music aficionados, history and biography enthusiasts, and every reader who enjoys compelling human drama will marvel over, empathize with, wonder at, and be captivated by Felix Mendelssohn, the story of the sometimes taciturn man whose musical genius revealed the depths of his heart.

About the Author:

Helen Martens is knowledgeable and well practiced in the art of music. She earned a piano diploma (ARCT) from the Toronto Conservatory and LRSM (Licentiate) from the Royal Schools of Music in London, England. She studied piano accompaniment at the Juilliard School of Music and won praise in that capacity. Throughout her adult life she also conducted award winning school, church, college, and community.choirs. Martens also pursued an academic career. She received her BA and MA as a music major at the University of Minnesota and her PhD in musicology at Columbia University in New York City, (1968) with her dissertation about the songs of the Hutterites.. (She may well be the only person on the planet who received a call from Hollywood because of a doctoral dissertation. Leonard Nimoy's lackeys called to enlist her help in the making of a movie - Holy Matrimony). This author taught for several years in public schools in Winnipeg, at Bluffton College in Ohio for three years, and after completing her course work for her PhD, she taught at the University of Waterloo (Conrad Grebel College) in Waterloo, Ontario. Her scholarly publications include articles in various scholarly journals, the book Hutterite Songs, 2002, and Felix Mendelssohn, Out of the Depths of his Heart in 2009. The latter work, based on years of painstaking research, beginning in1980, is written in the style of a novel so as to appeal to a broader reading public. And also because Martens discovered the heretofore virtually unknown beautiful, brilliant, aristocratic pianist, Delphine von Schauroth, who became more than a passing fancy for Felix Mendelssohn. She has completed her second book about Mendelssohn and hopes to publish it soon. The leading Mendelssohn authority in the UK, Peter Ward Jones, pronounced the book, Felix Mendelssohn, Out of the Depths of his Heart to be "a most refreshing approach to an infinitely fascinating man"; and the book has been recommended by the prestigious Library Journal.
