12mo in original full calf with spine ruled in gilt and red leather title label stamped in gilt. Two volumes in one. (1) 162 and 154 (2). First American edition of the work that first appeared in London in 1793, a compilation of short pieces for women culled from the author's remembrances of conversations conducted at afternoon gatherings with her mother (identified only as "Amanda, as the author identifies herself only as Honoria) and various perosns of influence and learning. Among the topics: "On The Influence of Education", "On Novels", " Anger", "on Dancing", "On Marriage", "On Dissipation" and several conversations about key female figures in (mainly British) history such as Anne Boleyn, Catherine Parr, Elizabeth Gray, Margaret of Anjou, Eleanor of Castille, etc. This copy is bound upside down, with the front board reattached; significant wear, rubbing and chipping overall.
