Orig. full brown morocco ruled in gilt and blind, raised spine bands, gilt-decorated spine panels, A.e.g. Some wear to corners and leather, lacks title-page and preliminary pages to Vol. Two, else a very good copy. Nissen BBI 575. Bennett, p. 37 "Undoubtedly a major permanent work." Eaton spent his entire career at Yale, both as student and professor, except for his graduate studies under Asa Gray at Harvard. Back at Yale, he became one of the first professors of botany in America. Eaton's botanical interests were far ranging, and in the 1860s his collecting interests led him to Utah. He also contributed extensive floristic accounts to the United States Mexican Boundary Survey, Clarence King's Geological Exploration of the 40th Parallel, George Wheeler's Geographical Surveys West of the One Hundredth Meridian, and the Geological Survey of California.
