About this Item

First French Edition (published simultaneously with a Latin version) of a lavishly illustrated fête book describing the famed carrousel of 1662, a spectacular equestrian display staged by young Louis XIV. Folio: [8],8,17-61,[1,blank],63-67,[1,imprimatur],65-104pp, including half-title and engraved title (with portrait of Louis XIV by Gilles Rousselet), plus 96 engravings (4 double-page depictions of processions; 3 double-page views of assembled participants and spectators; double-page illustration of the King in costume as a Roman emperor on horseback; 29 large text illustrations, mostly equestrian portraits; 59 emblems and devices of participants and miscellaneous decorations) by Israel Silvestre, Francois Chauveau and Rousselet after Silvestre and Chauveau; 12 head- and tailpieces, and 7 engraved initials. Eighteenth-century half morocco, spine in seven compartments gilt between raised bands, paper covered boards with green octagonal escutcheon on upper cover. An excellent copy with deep, rich plate impressions; occasional staining and marginal soiling, several old minor paper repairs, leaf 51 (with emblematic engravings) damp-stained and possibly supplied from another copy; binding secure and tight, with staining and wear to covers. Provenance: period library shelf label and bookplate of Paul and Marianne Gourary (this copy sold by Christie's as Lot 355 on 12 June 2009) on front paste down, period ink monogram on first blank and half-title. Tchemerzine (1977) V, 162. Vinet 504. Watanabe 1908. The square in front of the Tuilleries was used to host the games in which five teams, or "quadrilles," representing Romans (led by the King), Persians, Turks, East Indians and American Indians, challenged each other in a series of events staged in a vast amphitheater. The engravings illustrate scenes of the arena, individual members and supporters of the teams, and the teams' emblematic devices. Perrault, of course, is best known for creating an entire literary genre, the fairy tale, derived from half-forgotten folk tales. His Le Petit Chaperon rouge (Little Red Riding Hood), Cendrillon (Cinderella), Le Chat Botté (Puss in Boots), La Barbe bleue (Bluebeard), and many others were later rewritten and popularized by the Brothers Grim. But he began his career as an official in charge of royal buildings during the reign of the Sun King. Bookseller Inventory # BB0937
