About this Item

New York: Century Company, (1929). Octavo, quarter parchment and batik boards. 435 pages. First Edition, large paper issue, limited to 500 coopies, signed by Dorothea Donn-Byrne, as Literary Executrix. A fine copy, entirely unopened. Lacks publishers slip case. Byrne's last novel, published posthumously. A love story set against the background of the Napoleonic wars, by the author many consider the most under-rated Irish American author of the 20th Century. Donn Byrne (1889-1928) was born Brian Oswald Patrick Donn-Byrne to Irish parents who were on a business trip to New York City. They soon returned to Ireland where Byrne was raised speaking both Irish and English. While still a young man he came under the influence of Bulmer Hobson, founder of Irish volunteer movement, who inspired in him a love of Irish history and nationalism. After studying at Dublin, Paris, and Leipzig, he is said to have turned down his Ph.D. on the grounds that he would have to wear evening clothes to his early morning examinations, something no true Irish gentleman would ever do. In 1911 he moved to New York City, married his Irish sweetheart, and settled into the life of a freelance journalist, contributing pieces to The Smart Set, Harper's Magazine, Scribner's Magazine, and working on the Catholic Encyclopedia and the Century Dictionary. Upon the publication of his" Messer Marco Polo" in 1921 he began to achieve popularity as a novelist. ".To the direct simplicity of the traditional Irish story-telling he added color and picturesque detail.Donn-Byrne was a typical, romantic, fighting North Irishman. His writings manifest his deep aversion to "progress," his belief in the futility of politics, his love of sport, and his poetic Scots-Irish mysticism. In his work he tried to capture for an instant "a beauty that was dying slowly, imperceptibly, but would soon be gone." And with his feeling for color and his ear for the music of words he succeeded in imparting a mythical and mystical beauty to the Ireland of his imagination.
