Book Description New Haven: Yale University Press., 1948. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Grey cloth with paper labels. 4to. Unpaginated. Grey cardboard slipcase. Illustrated with 50 plates. Limited edition of 100 numbered copies (#59) with an original signed drypoint etching by Tuttle. Introduction by Chauncey Brewster Tinker and critique by Lewis E. York. Henry Emerson Tuttle (1890-1946) was one of America's greatest 20th century etchers of birds. Although largely self-taught he received formal training at Yale University and the Slade School of Art in London. He created his first drypoint engraving in 1925, a medium that he would favor for the remainder of his career. In the 1930s and 40s he was Curator of Prints at Yale University Art Gallery. His legacy was honored posthumously with the publication of this book which presents a complete catalogue of his drypoint engravings from 1921-46. The signed etching at the front of this book is "Flying Cock" from 1928 which is also illustrated as Plate XVII in the book. A fine copy with some light browning to the paper spine label. The text is fine and clean although there is some light browning to the pastedown gutters. The book has a slight musty odor from attic storage. The slipcase is very good with some light edgewear. Postage extra. Signed by Illustrator(s). Bookseller Inventory # 7260
