The Fighting Cheyennes
Period gilt-ruled red levant and cloth, spine gilt, t.e.g.; 8vo; pp. viii, , 431, with 11 maps (3 of them folding). This unique copy extra-illustrated with more than 150 original watercolors by M. William Bradley, in full color, labelled, and "mostly from original objects." He dedicates them to his wife in 1916. Front hinge cracked after FFEP; spine label chipped; some interesting penciled marginalia (seems knowledgable, perhaps Bradley's). Tipped to the front flyleaf is a portion of a letter on "Buffalo Bill's Wild West Combined with Pawnee Bill's Great Far East" letterhead, and laid in is a letter from bookseller George S. MacManus regarding Bradley, about whom little is known, except that he collected Native Americana, and likely created these detailed illustrations from his own collection. The wonderfully accomplished pen and gouache illustrations range from small and marginal (barely touching the text), to expansive (incorporated into a map or lavishly running into the text), and show artifacts (costume, pipes, charms, and weapons), animals, portraits, and landscapes. A remarkable volume. Bookseller Inventory # D6230
