Book Description London: Printed for E. Newbery. no date, 1798. ?FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), 140 x 80 mms., pp. vi, 174, engraved frontispiece (by Scott after Eckstein) dated 25 March 1798, contemporary quarter red sheepskin, marbled boards (soiled); title-page and frontispiece a bit soiled and foxed, some slight fingering of text, corners a bit worn. The tendentiously prescriptive rhetoric of the introduction could almost have been written by Wackford Squeers: "we presume to hope, that the historical facts here collected together will have a due influence on the minds of the youth of both sexes, whose instruction and entertainment the compiler had principally in view, and that they will imitate the examples of the good children, and see with detestation and horror, the vicious behaviour of the unnatural and degenerate." Roscoe, J134 (5). ESTC locates copies in BL and Liverpool in these islands; Bowdoin and UCLA in north America; and Melbourne in Australia. ESTC also suggests that the volume was published in the 1770s with a slight alteration in the title, viz. Filial duty recommended and enforc'd. ESTC N31533 records an edition putatively published in 1789, A new book for the improvement of young gentlemen and ladies. Filial duty, recommended and enforced, by a variety of instructive and entertaining stories. Locations: Stanford, Indiana Lilly, Toronto, Illinois. Bookseller Inventory # 7611
