About this Item

Finding the North Pole, Dr. Cook's own story of his discovery, April 21, 1908, and the story of commander Peary's discovery, April 6th, 1909. The book includes nearly 100 and illustrations and wonderful early 20th century arctic photographs. The authors and publishers asked Admiral George W. Melville, the survivor of three arctic expeditions to write the introduction to give the book "his stamp of authority" This is not the 448 page book listed under the same name and copyrighted by Schull in 1909. It is a book copyrighted by Schull in 1909 but may be a special printing for the use as a salesman sample? Hyperbole aside, the pictures in this very good + book are exciting and show the rugged conditions and real dangers these explorers endured, their clothing, food and indigenous guides. Following the first section of the book(illustrations) is nearly 50 pages of historical and sometimes poignant text. Internally book is very fine and unmarked the cover has gilt lettering which has been embossed into the cover on the front and back. There is also a bright waving American flag over the illustrated Arctic Circle. The front cover has designs in red and black and the verso has an illustration of an eskimo. Spine is not lettered and a bit soiled. Book is tight and square and a nice collectible for collectors interested in Arctic exploration. Bookseller Inventory # 000846
