A delightful preface by Teddy Roosevelt about having to wash your hands before dinner all but ruining the repast. Beston was an American writer and naturalist who was an ambulance driver in the French army in 1915 but was best known as the author of The Outermost House in 1925. He also wrote "A Volunteer Poilu: memories of the struggle for the Bois le Pretre and the Defense of Verdun" and "Full Speed Ahead: an eye-witness account of life aboard submarines, destroyers, and battleships of the United States Navy."
